Observe only vs control: which should I use?

Observe only reads the printer and never sends it anything. Control lets PrintSol pause, stop and start prints.

3 min read

Every printer in PrintSol is either observed or controlled, and you choose per printer with the "Observe only" checkbox under Edit printer on the Printers page. The change is saved the moment you tick it.

Observe only

PrintSol reads status, progress, AMS contents and printer messages, but never sends a command or a file. Pause, stop, speed, detection settings and starts are refused with "… is in observe mode. Switch it to control first." Light, Refresh and camera snapshots still work. Use this for a printer you drive entirely by hand.

Control

PrintSol can pause, resume and stop prints, change the speed and detection settings, and send files from the Print Queue. The queue and Auto-print only use printers in control mode.

Which mode a printer starts in

  • Imported from Bambu Cloud: observe.
  • Added by hand on the Printers page: observe.
  • Added from the bridge window: control.
  • A cloud printer that a bridge picks up on its network with an access code is switched to control automatically.

Control does not change the printer

Switching a printer to control in PrintSol changes nothing on the printer itself. Whether a Bambu printer accepts a start from software is decided by its own firmware: on firmware 01.08 and newer that needs LAN Only mode with Developer Mode on. Without it, PrintSol uploads the file and you press start on the printer screen.

LAN Only mode disconnects the printer from Bambu Cloud, so the Bambu Handy app and cloud features stop working for that printer until you turn it back. That is how Bambu designed it. Many farms keep a few printers on the cloud and press start on those by hand.
