AMS slots: what is loaded, and setting a slot by hand

What the AMS reports, when to tell PrintSol yourself, and when a hand-set slot is cleared again.

4 min read

Each printer card on the Printers page has a Filament section listing the external holder (EXT) and every AMS slot, with type, colour and what is left.

What the AMS reports

  • Bambu spools with an RFID tag ("RFID" chip): type, colour and remaining percentage, tracked automatically.
  • Other spools: the AMS senses that a spool is there, and reports the type and colour you picked on the printer. It cannot weigh them, so the grams show "?"; weigh the spool on the Filaments page.

For a loaded spool without a tag, PrintSol keeps a stock record named like SLOT-12-3 and links it to the closest matching colour you stock (or creates one). When a different colour appears in that tray, the old record is put back on the shelf and a new one starts.

Setting a slot by hand

When the printer reports the wrong filament, or nothing (for example the external holder), press change on that slot, pick the colour from Loaded filament and press Set. The slot shows a "manual" chip.

When a hand-set slot is cleared

  • In an AMS tray: as soon as the tray is empty or a different filament type is inserted, the hand-set value is cleared and the slot follows the printer again. The Activity log notes it. The same type keeps your colour.
  • A tagged Bambu spool always wins over a hand-set value.
  • The external holder keeps what you set, because the printer cannot sense a spool there. Change it yourself when you swap rolls.

To hand a slot back to the printer, choose "— nothing / let the printer report —".

Why it matters

The queue picks printers by what is loaded, every start maps the file's filaments to AMS trays (and refuses if a colour is missing), and filament use is booked against the spool in the tray it printed from. A spool taken out of a tray, or a Bambu spool running empty, puts a warning in the Activity log.
