Print queue

Auto-print: let the queue start prints by itself

What the Auto-print switch does, which printers and tasks it picks, and why a task may wait.

4 min read

Tick Auto-print at the top of the Print Queue. From then on, every minute, PrintSol starts a ready task on each printer that is free. It is one switch for the whole organisation.

A printer is free when it is

  • in control mode and not out of service,
  • idle, with its bed marked clear (a finished print still on the bed blocks it),
  • reachable through a bridge heard from in the last 90 seconds,
  • not already busy with a start, pause or stop on its way.

A task is ready when

  • its part has a file and it has a colour, or at least a filament type,
  • that filament is loaded: the exact colour, a very similar shade of the same type, or for type-only tasks any spool of that type,
  • there is a slice for that printer's model, plate and the part's process profile. If not, PrintSol asks the slicer for one and tries again on a later round.

Tasks start in priority order, then by due date. A task pinned to one printer waits for that printer.

Why a task waits

Open the task popup: the line starting "Auto-print:" tells you, for example "Waiting for an idle printer with a clear bed". If slicing failed, the card says so and PrintSol tries again after an hour.

When a start fails

A temporary problem (bridge not connected, upload hiccup) is retried up to three times a few minutes apart. Other failures leave the task queued with the reason on the card, and Auto-print tries it again after 15 minutes.

Plan limits

On the Free plan Auto-print starts one print at a time. When that limit holds a task back, the Activity log says so once a day. Prints you start by hand with Go are never limited, and paid plans are not capped.

Auto-print only starts tasks; it does not clear beds. After each print, take it off and press Confirm & cleaned (or use the printer's QR sticker) before the next one can start.
